Previously we did a review for IM+ Talk by SHAPE Services, now we have an update to let you know all of the great changes they have made for this incredible app! Some of the changes made are, but not limited to:
- Completely redesigned user interface with new theme
- Conversations view
- New messages indicators
- Many bugfixes
One of the bad things about Skype is that the mobile version for BlackBerry is only available for Verizon Wireless. With IM+ Talk you can now have Skype on your phone from other carriers. I have a 9330 from Sprint, and it runs like a champ. Now I use Skype on my home computer as it is and with this app I can now have that other media on my phone too. Being ale to be contacted at any point in time is critical for me. It’s even more critical to have Skype if you make international calls.
So lets go over some of the features of this app. The GUI is sweet. It’s easily describable as crisp and clean and almost HD comparable. Everything you need is right there and big enough you can see it to know what it is. Just like in Skype for PC you can see all of your contacts. In the upper right hand corner you have your contact list in one tab and a conversation list in another. The battery meter is nice and clear along with the WiFi indicator and the time. In the lower left hand corner is the talk button just how it would be on a phone. Roll over your contact, press talk and your off.

One of the features I love about Skype is the Skype to Skype calls. With your PC your ethernet runs in Full Duplex. On your BlackBerry it runs in Half Duplex mode. That’s a bunch of techy stuff. What it means is that when your on your Skype to Skype call you have to use your convienence key. By default it is the left outside key. Press to talk, release to listen just like a walkie talkie. You may make free VoIP calls via Wi-Fi if you select “VoiP only” or “VoIP preferred” in IM+ Talk “Settings”. When you are not in Wi-Fi zone, you can still make calls using callback. In this case both the contact person and you will get the incoming call. This is because when you use callback you are actually making two calls: one – to Skype contact or to phone number and another – to your callback number. The calls are very clear, I was impressed on how clear they really were.
Conversation view is a nice feature to have. With this you can see each conversation that you are having, which is helpful if you are like me and have several conversations going at one time. Just like in most apps it separates what your and your contact say, nothing real different but always a bonus! New message indicators are a necessity for me. If I am busy I can look and see what I have waiting so I don’t leave a contact just hanging out in the breeze. Over all the changes made to IM+ Talk are great improvements to an already great app and for the price it’s a must have for a traveling person or a person with people in other countries.
