[Review] Lucid by Mobster Mobile Design

It has been so long since I’ve had the pleasure of a theme by Mobster Mobile Design I almost forgot what it was like to use one of her exquisite themes. Not that I’m not grateful for any theme on BlackBerry 7, but I have surely gotten used to a lower standard. Today we have Lucid, MMD’s latest. Read on to hear about the goods and bad of a fully custom theme on Bold 99xx.

Features:

  • Wallpaper friendly design.  This theme looks great with any of your favorite wallpapers/image
  • 4 fixed icon categories (settings, media, social and custom) that displays three fixed selections (view images)
  • 8-10 custom icons that can be chosen by the user to display favorite or most used apps on the home screen
  • Large clock and date visible on the home screen
  • two fixed icons:  profiles and manage connections for easy accessibility
  • FREE UPDATE

Before I get ahead of myself let me add that Lucid is compatible with all BlackBerry devices running OS 5.0 to 6.0 as well as all BlackBerry Bold 9900 series on OS 7.0 to 7.1.

Disclaimer and the only bad thing about running fully custom themes on BlackBerry 7-7.1 is that Folders will appear empty. This is a bug that may never be fixed. But not a bug that is the fault of MMD. This is just how it is with fully custom homescreens on BB7. Older OS’s like 5.0 and 6.0 will not have this issue. But this doesn’t mean you can’t access apps in Folders. There’s two things you can do. 1.) You can move all apps to your homescreen prior to activating the theme. Or 2.) you can use Universal Search to find these apps should you chose to leave them hidden in the Folders. Both of those options will remedy the Theme Studio bug.

Now the theme itself minus that little adventure is damn awesome. Mobster bring her usual sack of “OH MY GOD” to the theme style. 4 fixed categories, each app (Bluetooth, Options, BBM, Twitter, Pictures, Music and so on has it’s own unique graphic. The categories consist of: Settings, Media, Social and Custom. Custom is direct access to your first 8 icons on the app screen. Notifications sit comfortably in the bottom left corner. Manage Connections sit in the top left corner. 3 fixed options sit in the bottom right corner, including Profiles, Manage Connection launcher and Hide all option (doubles as Alarm Clock display). Homescreen wallpaper is customizable. Icons at the app screen are all skinned nicely. It all flows cohesively.

Mobster also received help from another one of our favorite developers and theme gurus DrkApprentice. Doug spent a good amount of time helping ensure that she got the best possible coding with all the nightmare-ish tricks to bringing this theme over to Bold 99xx series. In my opinion it couldn’t have gone better. Lucid is available now in BlackBerry App World for a reasonable $3.99. Get your own copy below.
