tawkon Ltd. has developed an application that runs on your smartphone with the sole purpose to monitor and analyze your cell phone’s radiation using a technology they call Real-time Radiation Indication (RRI), of which they have a patent pending. This application is tawkon. Now we all visits sites like Berryfication and others, hopefully you pop in here several times a day, because we love our phones or more specifically our Blackberry’s. Ever since the cell phone became mainstream the concern has existed that radiation from a cell phone may be harmful to you. This issue has and is still debated today with some saying it is a problem to others claiming there is not enough evidence and more time is needed to come to any type of conclusion. A lot of studies have been done with researchers contradicting each other leaving us to decide how concerned we need to be.

The Governments of Europe, Canada and the United Stated have decided there is enough evidence to tell the Cell Phone manufacturers that in order to pass a phone for approval they must limit the specific absorption rate, or SAR to a specified level. Without getting too technical, for me at least, the SAR is “a way of measuring the quantity of radio frequency (RF) energy that is absorbed by the body.” Since most studies indicate there ‘may’ be little to no harm in using a cell phone it is always wise to be cautious with your approach to anything that can affect your health.

I’ve had tawkon running on my Blackberry for almost a week now and it is interesting to see how much or how little radiation my phone is producing during real time use or as I will explain later, if I were to use it. The radiation level changes constantly on your phone and will be higher when your signal is at it’s weakest as your phone attempts to maintain a signal or seek out one. In testing this I used a similar method tawkon did in their video you can watch on the product page at the Berryfication Store. I found that in a strong signal area and using the easy to activate feature built into the Blackberry’s menu I could see the level of radiation my phone was using in an easy to read bar that changes from green to yellow then red depending on my signal strength or the environment I was in.

If I went into an Office building where my signal got weaker (an elevator in my case) I would get a vibrate warning with a pop up screen advising me to to take precautions by either using a Bluetooth headset or the speakerphone to limit the exposure to radiation, all without interfering with my call. Of course the option is there for you to just ignore the warning and continue on with the call normally but I did feel a tad uncomfortable doing so, yet without this application I would not have given radiation a second though while on a call.

I do use a Bluetooth headset a lot as well as a Bluetooth speakerphone in my car but in testing this application I did away with those to monitor my phone. What I liked about the application too is you can also measure your possible radiation levels while not using your phone by using what tawkon calls ‘Prediction Mode’ which can let you know what your possible exposure may be if you do use your phone in any given area or environment. With a lot of statistical options available such as Last Call, Last Week, Last Month or Last Six Months you can view via a graph chart your possible exposure, plus with settings such as alert type (vibrate, sound, vibrate + sound or none) and sensitivity level you can have full control of the application. I left the sensitivity level on high and the alert at vibrate for testing and then was able to see via the graph when I was alerted by tawkon that radiation was higher than normal.

How and when you use your phone will vary widely with everyone but I found more peace of mind using the application and knowing it was looking out for me when maybe I was not doing so before I installed it. tawkon is available to download as a fully functional trial version that is limited to 75 calls which is more than enough to make a decision on how handy and useful you think the application is to you, a friend or Family member. Visit tawkon’s website and watch the video. I highly suggest you download the trial version and decide if $9.99 is worth it to have this handy and very useful application help you with your long term health.

Since there is still no real conclusion as to how much harm your Blackberry or any cell phone is or will do to you long term why not give yourself a little peace of mind and give this application a trial run. Available now for the 8520, 8900, 9000 and 9700 Blackberry’s I hope we will see more support for all devices sooner rather than later, head on over to the Berryfication Store and the tawkon website to get as much information as you need to help decide if this is an application you need. I learned a lot about my phone’s possible radiation and how and where I use it to decide I will be keeping it on my phone, not to scare me but to keep me aware, monitor my activity, and help me use my Blackberry more wisely.
